Brazilian Plywood Market
The value of international trade in tropical plywood is estimated
at US$6 billion a year, more than twice the size of the global market for
tropical logs. Given the size of this trade, the massive decline in plywood
prices – coupled with increasing competition from other wood-based (and
non-wood-based) panel products – has had a major impact on many ITTO producer
member countries.* See Dossier Brazil
for major production & exports
Plywood under pressureThe tropical plywood sector is under strong threat from other plywood and wood-based panels. Total world plywood production increased by 19% between 1991 and 2001 and total production of wood-based panels by 50%, but tropical plywood production fell in this period.* 1. Indonesia, 2. Malaysia and 3. Brazil are the world leading producers and together they produce 63 % of all tropical plywood. But China has suddenly emerged as major player in this market.
Brazil's Plywood MarketIn the past few years, Brazil has moved from being a tropical plywood producer and exporter to being an exporter of primarily plantation softwood plywood. Besides that, unlike the two major producers, who export their plywood, more than half of Brazil's production is to the domestic marketEucalyptus and Pine PlywoodAnother important fact is that Brazilian plywood is mainly (90 %) produced from eucalyptus and pine. So, pine plywood and combi plywood (with face and back tropical veneer and core pine veneer) are the major types of plywood produced in Brazil and their role is continuing to increase due to the growing availability of materials from the fast-growing pine plantations in the country's southern regionEurope imports Brazil's PlywoodMost of Brazil's plywood exports go the EU. And, regarding prices, given the importance of its domestic market andits relatively limited share of the international market, tropical plywood prices in Brazil do not always move fully in tandem with international prices.
