Information sheet about the Jaguaruna Projet (Ceará, Brazil)

"The
social actions reach space in the internet, mainly by the facility
of divulgation
and support. Common people and entreprises can give their social contribution
only by clicking, for instance, on a banner. The Projeto Solidariedade ao Nordeste,
through its site www.euqueroajudar.com.br, counts on the "spirit of goodwill
and union" from the people to collect resources and funds on behalf of the
families of Jaguaruana.
Motivated
by a news report shown at the Jornal Nacional in February 1999, Marta Regina Guedes
Benedetto Santos settled the Projeto Solidariedade ao Nordeste, which consists
in helping the families of the region of the Serra (Mountain) de Jaguaruana by
"adoption". The proposition is simple and functional, anybody or any
entreprise can adopt a family and make deposits of about R$10,00 in average by
person that belongs to the family, the deposit becomes a credit in a supermarket
of the town where it is forbidden to buy beverages, cigarrettes and other products
of this kind.
By the site www.euqueroajudar.com.br everyone find good reasons
to participate in some way, by the adoption of a family, indicating someone who
could adopt or sponsor, working in a project, giving clothes, food or working
in some kind of service. In the site it is also possíble to view the news
report from the Jornal Nacional which was at the beginning of the project and
check the entreprises that are helping and sponsoring.
The site's goal is
divulgation all over the world of the inhuman and miserable situation in which
live the population of Jaguaruana, a small town with 32.000 inhabitants, 183 km
from Fortaleza - CE. The biggest drama for the almost 162 families that live in
the region of the town's Serra (Mountain) is the lack of water, which carries
in many cases the death of a lot of its inhabitants. Surprisingly, Jaguaruana
is situated over one of Nordeste's largest freatic sheet, what permits the construction
of artesian well sparing this way so many human lives because of scarce or lack
of water.
Among the actions proposed by the project, in a first moment, it
is necessary to face the population's major carence, that is stopping the hunger
and thirst through the sending of basic food. "Nourrished, they will have
the conditions to struggle and to search self-sustain, avoiding donations at middle
and long term", believes Maria de Lourdes Guedes Benedetto, one of the volunteers
that created the project."
